… And why that doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you’re human.
When someone walks into our office ready to quit smoking, we often ask: “Who walked in with you today?”
At first, people look puzzled. But then we explain. Yes, the part of you that wants to stop smoking showed up. But we carry more than one voice inside. Maybe you also brought in the part of you that’s scared to let go. Or the part that still sees cigarettes as a source of calm, comfort, or even identity. One of your parts might be asking, “Will we ever have fun again?” Another might be simmering: “This is our last vice. Who am I anymore?”
These different parts aren’t the enemy. They’re trying to help you in the only ways they know how. Each part has had that role and job for a long time.
The part that reaches for a cigarette after a stressful day? It’s not trying to sabotage you. It might be trying to soothe you.
The part that says, “Just one won’t hurt”? It may be trying to avoid the discomfort of change, the stress you’re feeling. Or maybe when you’re out drinking, that’s the part that just wants you to have fun! It’s stuck at age 20 when that’s all it knew to do for what it then called fun.
If we don’t take time to understand these parts, they can end up driving our choices in ways that feel like sabotage. But once we start listening with curiosity—not judgment—we open the door to lasting change.
That’s why quitting isn’t just about removing the nicotine. It’s about reconnecting with yourself.
At our session, whether you’re here for laser therapy or coaching, we give space for all of your parts to be seen, heard, and understood.
